This figure breaks down to 36 percent post-consumer and 31 percent pre-consumer recycled content.
Charles and Ray Eames developed their Aluminum Group chairs in 1958 as a special project for a private residence designed by Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard. At the time, the furniture was called the "leisure group," or "indoor-outdoor group" since it was meant to address the lack of quality outdoor furniture on the market. The seat-back suspension was a major technical achievement and represented a departure from the concept of the chair as a solid shell. Wonderfully comfortable, the Aluminum Group chairs became the basis for several other Eames designs, including the Soft Pad chairs. Today's Aluminum Group and Soft Pad chairs utilize recycled materials whenever possible, which can be returned to the recycling stream at the end of their current life. Considering the chairs' durability, timeless style, and value to collectors, however, these modern classics are more likely to remain in use for years to come.
