Flexi Stool
The FlexiStool was born late one night when future industrial designer Jon Elmaleh was working on an assignment at Rhode Island School of Design. He perched on a work stool, daydreaming about sailing, wondering why he couldn't bring that sense of calm motion to the act of sitting. Of course, he could--and made his daydream a reality by developing the FlexiStool, a seat that rocks and spins on a gently domed base. Over a decade, Jon continued to develop the stool, turning countless versions on a lathe and experimenting with shapes.
The handcrafted versions are used and enjoyed by musicians, craftsmen, writers, surgeons, and other professionals. A version with a hand-turned wooden base was selected for the Museum of Modern Art design store under the name Unistool. It was selected for the store as an example of good design by a participating architect in MoMA's exhibition The Un-Private House. This version was sold through MoMA from 1999 through 2002. Eventually, Jon's company put the FlexiStool into production with an upholstered top and durable steel base.
